Our Ministry

From Gospel times to the present, care of the sick has been seen as a special calling and privilege. Avera's sponsors, the Benedictine Sisters and the Presentation Sisters,  encourage all Avera caregivers to understand their work as a healing ministry and to demonstrate, by their words and actions, God's love for all people.

Avera fosters attention to spirituality in its employees through mission leadership development programs, discussions of ethical issues, articles in the employee newsletter and opportunities for private and group prayer. Avera also provides support and education for parish nurses and, through the Avera Clinical Pastoral Education program, offers accredited education for those engaged in pastoral care.

Charity Care

Avera is committed to the integral relationship between the health of persons and the health of communities. We work with our community partners to assess needs and available resources. We then channel those resources back into the towns and cities of our region to keep them vibrant and healthy places in which to live, work and grow. We pay particular attention to providing a full spectrum of health care services and promoting health and preventative care at the local level.

Haiti Commitment

Avera also embodies its mission in advocacy for the third-world poor by fund raising and working visits to the Haitian Health Foundation (HHF) located in Jeremie on the western end of Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.  Learn more about this commitment, and see comments and photographs from recent visits to Haiti.
