The Chapel
Avera St. Luke’s chapel provides a sacred space for people of all faiths to feel comforted and at peace, serving as a link between the healing power of Jesus and the mission of the Catholic health ministry.
The chapel was relocated in 2001, the hospital’s centennial year, to provide a place of immediate visibility and make it accessible to all. It is just inside the main west entrance to Avera St. Luke’s. Catholic worship service is offered three times weekly. Patients can tune their TV to Channel 21 to view these or special services or to hear hymn music.
The main chapel’s theme is one of hope, depicted by the seasonal “Tree of Life.” The chapel’s unique stained glass windows can be seen from outside as you enter Avera St. Luke’s main west entrance. The “Tree of Life” theme can also be found in the organic metalwork throughout the chapel.
The stained glass windows on the west side of the chapel serve as a beacon for visitors and project “The Tree of Life” in its four seasons. The five windows, including one in the Sacristy, begin and end with the season of spring, which is the season of hope and renewal of life.
The Adoration Chapel is to the left within the main chapel. The tradition of contemplative prayer and private adoration continues within this intimate space. Statues from the hospital’s former chapel can be found here, along with old stained glass windows and Stations of the Cross.
Shalom Room
The Shalom Room, located on the east wing of the St. Luke’s campus, provides a private space to gather and pray for families of patients in crisis.
Clergy Room
A comfortable space, adjacent to the Surgery waiting room on the first floor of the hospital’s west lobby, is provided for visiting clergy to meet family members, consult with others or to access the computer to obtain their specific church list.
Chaplains
Chaplains are available 24 hours a day at Avera St. Luke’s. If you’re in the hospital, simply dial 0 and ask for a chaplain. If you’re outside the hospital, dial (605) 622-5000. A Catholic priest is available 24 hours a day for sacramental ministry. Local pastors serve as consultants and are on call for all denominations.
Avera Mother Joseph Retirement Community
The chapel at Avera Mother Joseph Retirement Community serves all residents of the our senior living long-term care division: Mother Joseph Manor, Nano Nagle Village and Davis Court. Daily Mass is celebrated in this chapel. Anointing of the Sick is held monthly, as well as in time of emergency. Protestant worship services are held every Sunday and Tuesday.
